What is Engagement Rate?
Engagement rate (ER) measures how actively an influencer's audience interacts with their content. It's calculated as total engagements divided by total followers, expressed as a percentage. A higher ER typically means the creator has a more genuine, active audience.
Why ER Matters More Than Followers
A creator with 500K followers and a 0.5% ER drives less real impact than one with 50K followers and a 6% ER. Engagement rate is the single best proxy for audience quality — making it the first metric any brand should check before booking an influencer.
ER Benchmarks by Platform
Benchmarks vary significantly by platform. TikTok creators naturally see higher ERs (8–15% for nano) due to algorithmic distribution. Instagram ERs are lower (3–7% for nano) while YouTube ERs depend heavily on content type. Always compare within the same platform tier.
